Crafco 522 vs Dynapave D-9000: Comparison of the Two MTQ-Approved Sealants

Last updated: April 2026 · By the L’Équipe Marcil inc Team, Sherrington (Quebec)

In summary: Crafco 522 and Dynapave D-9000 are the two most widely used hot-applied polymer-modified bitumen sealants on professional job sites in Quebec, both approved by the Ministère des Transports (MTQ 14501). Crafco 522 is American-made, slightly more expensive, and considered the global benchmark; Dynapave D-9000 is manufactured in Canada, somewhat more economical, and technically equivalent for 95% of applications. This article compares both products across 7 criteria and helps you understand when to choose one over the other.

Where Do These Two Products Come From?

Crafco 522

Crafco Inc. is an American company founded in 1976 in Arizona, specializing in pavement maintenance products for the public works market. Crafco 522, marketed under the name Crafco Roadsaver 522, was developed specifically for cold North American climates and was the first polymer-modified bitumen sealant to be widely adopted by Canadian departments of transportation in the 1990s. It has been listed on the MTQ’s approved materials list for more than 25 years.

Dynapave D-9000

Dynapave Corporation is a Canadian manufacturer based in Ontario that has been developing pavement maintenance products since the 1980s, with a strong focus on Canadian conditions (intense freeze-thaw cycles, aggressive road salting). The D-9000 is their flagship product, designed to directly compete with Crafco 522 in the municipal and commercial pavement maintenance market. It is also MTQ 14501-approved and used on numerous public job sites in Quebec.

Analysis by Criterion

1. Performance at Very Low Temperatures

This is the criterion where the two products differ most. Crafco 522 has historically been tested at -34 °C with success under certain laboratory conditions, whereas Dynapave D-9000 is officially certified down to -29 °C. In practice in Quebec, both hold up through most winters without issue, but for extreme applications (northern regions, highway pavements heavily exposed to cold winds), Crafco 522 maintains a slight advantage.

2. Field Service Life

Our observations from more than 30 years of projects in the Monteregie region suggest an average service life of 5 to 7 years for Crafco 522 compared to 4 to 6 years for Dynapave D-9000 under comparable conditions. The difference is not enormous (approximately 1 year on average), but it can matter over a 20-year horizon where a product that lasts one year longer means one fewer intervention over the entire period.

3. Material Cost per Kilogram

Dynapave D-9000 is typically 15 to 20% less expensive than Crafco 522 to purchase. For a medium-sized job using 100 kg of sealant, the difference is approximately $35 on the material invoice alone. In the total cost of a project, materials represent about 30–40%, so the final savings for the client amounts to roughly 5–8% of the total price.

4. Ease of Use for the Technician

Both products are relatively similar to work with in the melter, but Dynapave D-9000 has a slightly lower viscosity at application temperature, which marginally improves penetration into hairline cracks (less than 3 mm). Crafco 522 is slightly more “tacky” and can be a little more precise for manual finishing work on larger cracks.

5. Availability and Logistics

Crafco 522 is distributed by several wholesalers across Canada, with generally good availability. Dynapave D-9000, manufactured in Ontario, benefits from a shorter supply chain within Canada, reducing lead times and shipping costs, particularly for Quebec contractors. In the event of a stockout at a distributor, Dynapave can typically be received faster than Crafco.

6. Compliance with Public Tender Specifications

Both products appear on the MTQ’s list of approved materials, so both are accepted for public projects in Quebec. For municipal tenders, the choice between the two is generally left to the contractor, unless the specific project specifications require a particular brand (rare, but it does occur for very large highway projects).

7. Batch-to-Batch Consistency

This is a criterion that is invisible to the client but important to the contractor. Both manufacturers maintain rigorous quality control, but Crafco has a slightly stronger reputation for lot-to-lot consistency — meaning two containers of Crafco 522 delivered six months apart will have virtually identical properties, whereas Dynapave may show minor variations between batches.

When to Choose Crafco 522

  • Projects exposed to extreme conditions (elevation, wind, proximity to a frozen body of water, full exposure with no protective snow cover)
  • Condominiums and businesses focused on longevity where one additional year between sealing cycles is well worth the price difference
  • Very high-demand surfaces (heavy industrial parks, heavy truck manoeuvring yards) where Crafco Polyflex fibre-reinforced is an even more premium option
  • Clients who explicitly request the “best” option and are not constrained by budget

When Dynapave D-9000 Is an Excellent Choice

  • Residential and light commercial projects where the added cost of Crafco is not justified by the conditions of use
  • Budget-conscious clients who want an MTQ-approved product without paying the market leader’s premium
  • Rural areas far from urban centres where Dynapave supply can be faster than Crafco
  • Medium-sized municipal projects where both products are accepted in the tender
  • “Buy Canadian” purchases for clients who prefer to support a Canadian manufacturer

What We Use at L’Équipe Marcil inc

In our case, we use Crafco 522 as our standard product on approximately 80% of our projects, and Dynapave D-9000 on approximately 20%, mainly when a client specifically requests it for budget or preference reasons, or in the event of a temporary Crafco supply shortage. We have never received a client complaint about the performance of either product, which confirms that both are excellent for the vast majority of applications.

For truly demanding situations — heavy industrial parks, manoeuvring zones, high-traffic municipal pavements — we can also recommend Crafco Polyflex, a premium fibre-reinforced variant that costs approximately 40% more than Crafco 522 but offers superior service life on very high-demand sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix Crafco 522 and Dynapave D-9000 on the same project?

Technically yes, because both are chemically compatible and conform to the same standard. In practice, no, because it complicates warranty tracking and creates risks of differential degradation between zones. We recommend using a single product per project.

Is the final price to the client really different between the two?

Yes, but marginally. For a standard residential project, the difference is approximately $30–50 on the final invoice. For a commercial project covering 1,500 linear feet, the difference can reach $150–250. For a municipal project covering 5,000 linear feet, the gap can be $700–1,200.

Are there other MTQ-approved sealants besides these two?

Yes. Meadowsprings MPS 2100 (a Quebec manufacturer) and Koch PolyGrid (a premium American product) are also on the MTQ list. They are less common among contractors in the Monteregie region but are technically valid. See our complete guide on the MTQ 14501 standard.

Does the sealant brand affect my contractor’s warranty?

No, the warranty is provided by the contractor on their workmanship, not by the manufacturer on the product. A good contractor warrants their work for a minimum of 2 years regardless of which sealant is used, provided it is an MTQ-approved product applied according to best practices.
